How to Write Lesson Objectives That Actually Steer the Lesson

You know the objective you scribbled on the board this morning. "Students will understand photosynthesis." It sat there all period doing absolutely nothing. It didn't tell you what to teach next, it didn't tell your students what success looked like, and it definitely didn't tell you what to put on the quiz Friday.

A useful objective is a promise about what a student will do by the end of the period, at what level of difficulty, and how you'll know. If it can't do those three jobs, it's wall art.

The three-part test

Before you write anything, ask yourself these in order:

  • What exact task will a student perform? Not "understand" or "know." Something you can watch happen.
  • At what level of complexity? Recall a definition? Apply a formula to a new context? Evaluate competing claims?
  • How will I see it? On an exit ticket, a lab conclusion, a whiteboard problem, a Claim-Evidence-Reasoning paragraph.

If your objective survives all three, your lesson basically plans itself. If it doesn't, you're going to improvise for 50 minutes and hope.

Before and after

Here's what this looks like with real topics I've taught.

Before: Students will understand Newton's second law.

After: Given a free-body diagram with two forces, students will calculate net force and acceleration for a 1 kg cart, and predict whether the cart speeds up, slows down, or reverses. Exit ticket: three diagrams, one of each case.

See what happened? The "after" version tells you to spend time on free-body diagrams and sign conventions, not just plug-and-chug. It tells students the quiz will have diagrams, not vocabulary. And it tells you exactly what three problems to put on the exit ticket.

Another one.

Before: Students will learn about the periodic table.

After: Students will predict the charge of an ion for any main-group element using its column, and explain the pattern in one sentence referencing valence electrons. Check: whiteboard six elements, cold call for the reasoning.

One more, because bio deserves love.

Before: Students will understand natural selection.

After: Given a scenario with a changing environment and a trait with variation, students will write a CER paragraph explaining which phenotype increases in frequency and why. Rubric: claim, two pieces of evidence from the scenario, reasoning that names variation, selection pressure, and differential reproduction.

Verbs that pull their weight

Ditch "understand," "know," "learn about," "be familiar with," and "appreciate." They're invisible on an assessment. Use verbs you can film: calculate, predict, diagram, sort, rank, justify, revise, design, refute, translate, derive.

A quick sanity check: if two teachers read your objective and wrote quiz questions from it, would the questions look similar? If yes, you're good. If one wrote definitions and the other wrote application problems, your objective is too loose.

Work backward from the exit ticket

The move that changed my planning: write the exit ticket first. Three questions, five minutes, the exact thing you want them to do. Then your objective is basically a description of that ticket, and your lesson is whatever gets them ready to nail it. Direct instruction, practice set, lab, discussion, whatever. The objective and the assessment are the same promise, said twice.

This is also why unit planning gets easier when the objectives are tight. Each day's exit ticket is a small piece of the unit test, and you can actually see the arc.

When you don't have time for any of this

Some weeks you have coaching duty, IEP meetings, and a kid throwing up in third period. Writing sharp objectives for five preps is not happening.
