Dichotomous Key: Identifying the Eight Field Specimens How to use this key: start at STEP 1. Each step lists rules in order. A rule reads "IF trait = value THEN result". Compare the specimen's value for the named trait (from specimen-traits.csv) to each rule's value, in order, and use the first rule that matches. A result is either "GO TO STEP n" (move to that step and keep comparing) or a name (that name is the specimen's identification, and you are done). A step's last line may instead read "ELSE result", which matches any specimen that did not match an earlier rule in that step.
